the first four years

somewhere online within cu’s website are all my classes, each listing a breakdown in grades for like the past ten years. i saw it back when i was registering but now that i need it i can't find it. i wanted to see how many people fail my econ class in a given semester because i have a feeling that i will soon become that statistic. basically i’m given 4 and a half days to do the econ homework, but i will start on it, get frustrated, and move on to my other classes. this happens throughout most of the 4 and a half days, usually up to 10 minutes before it’s due; sometimes finished, sometimes not.

i put in about four or five solid days of homework a week, which leaves far too little time to run or work out. all there is time for is eating and wfmu. the dining room table is my little area i spend all day at and is horrible because of it’s close proximity to the fridge. i’m finally going to pick up some new kicks this week so i’m excited. hopefully they will get me running more routinely.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984): crazy guy with the funniest one-liners terrorizes kiddies in their dreams with freakin' blades on each finger. they had a special showing of this down in denver and it had been years since i saw it, so i couldn't pass it up. oh, and thanks to the three fools that bailed on me that night. well, two bailed, one was just too scared. so it takes about 5 minutes into the movie to figure out the entire plot. strangely the acting is pretty believable throughout. the first murder that takes place is one of the most gruesome deaths you'll ever see. there wasn't much, but every now and then they would slip a joke in and it would usually be really funny. like, "oh god i look twelve years old." (reading that now i'm not sure why that was funny, but it really was at the time.) my complaints: cheesy synth scary music. and whenever the lead girl was about to cry, it looked like she was grinning wildly. other than that she did good and i'm really surprised this movie didn't make her famous. also johnny depp was awesome. after the credits were over we had the pleasure of watching every murder by freddy from all six sequels, which added up to 32 deaths and a bus full of about a dozen or so kids driving off of a cliff. good times. anyway, it's a pretty decent horror flick and definitely worth seeing once every twenty or so years.
memorable, B+

what a shame for cu. they were so close to beating georgia but ended up losing by a point. except for about the last 40 seconds, they even led throughout the whole game. this saturday we are playing missouri and i thought we could totally beat them but this week they entered the rankings. so now we will probably lose and be 0 and 5.

happy anniversary to us.

the 1½ hit wonder

all the running is starting to take its toll. for five months i ran about a mile and a half, seven days a week and never a problem. now, running 2-3 days a week at 4-6 miles has my knees aching, some muscle or something on my thigh hurting so bad that it kills to bend my leg at the hip, and has blistered my feet up like no tomorrow. now someone like kim might say that it’s not healthy and i should stop. someone like me would say to just let my wounds heal up enough to run again then get back out. i figure i will toughen up if i keep at it. this isn’t a freaking marathon so it’s not like people can't run this distance. my legs just aren’t up to par with this kind of running i guess. give it time.

Little Miss Sunshine (2006): a little fat girl (you'll understand if you see the movie) and her family try to get her to a pagent, but will they make it or will the family's disfunctionality keep them from reaching their destination? don't worry they make it. the way that all the characters are each introducted in the beginning is really good. and it was nice to not have to sit and watch stupid credits rolling through either. i really liked every character. greg kinnear's character as the dad is really a douche and it's a wonder that the mom would even have stayed with him that long. throughout the whole movie while they are driving in the vw, you can see the cop cars through the rear window keeping the traffic back for the shoot. it got annoying. i liked how they never showed olive's routine, but gets subtly talked about throughout the movie. there are some really beautiful shots with lots of cool perspective shots (or whatever you would call them). and i have to say, the humor is really good. but the way the pagent ends is a little ridiculous. and there are slow parts and i didn't really feel that the movie brought too much emotion out of me. but it's heartfelt and well done i guess. see it.
fair, B-

kim is in newest city of york for library stuff. she’s so cool. she has to have meetings with UN library people at the united nations building. and she is going to see a musical. so i’m glad she there because it’s not a vacation by any means, but it’s a nice break from the routine she’s been in since we’ve moved back.

so, single file, the little band here that consists of a couple of old high school friends, was played on the radio for the first time here in denver a couple nights ago. it wasn’t the greatest song in the world and they sounded like every other band that’s been around for 4 years now. but hopefully they can get some more radio play in denver. i don’t see them ever getting any bigger than becoming an opening band for the bands that get all the main radio play here in denver. i see them becoming maybe a 1½ hit wonder if that. they just don’t have any edge that would put them over any other band. we’ll see.

myspace sucks because it can’t refresh your home screen automatically. it just sits there idle. myspace also sucks because there is no real good way to notify the user when a new message or whatever is received. google makes these myspace homos look like the amateurs they are. or maybe they designed the system so that it basically runs itself and tom and his people are just out spending their millions and neglecting myspace completely. myspace also sucks because you have to scroll down on your home page to see if you have any messages or not. although i wouldn’t want to take up their precious advertising space. i have so much homework.

the grateful dead

i ran over four miles a few days ago but got burned doing it. yesterday i ran around a good portion of standley lake and my knees are paying for it today. i've somehow entered into this new level of running and there are so many awesome trails i can get to. the only problem is that winter is coming. i am going to a concert this friday to see mudhoney. i actually really dig them so i'm looking forward to rockin out. saturday we have a game here versus arizona state. and i have so much homework and reading to do. ended up doing bad on the quiz. we are allowed to make it up for more points but i still don't know how to figure it out. it's really good to have friends again. i still miss our little life out there, but it's cool to be able to do things with people. my fellow intern bracken is actually moving to denver now with sky and their kid. excited for that.

i’m tired because like most nights i was up till forever doing homework. i actually have a decent handle on two of my classes but econ is killing me. our first homework assignment is due today in class and i think i would be lucky if i'd be able to finish it by tonight. i think. we’ll see. mudhoney was really awesome on Friday. it was a fairly tame show however i got a pretty bad slice on my shoulder from getting tossed into a wall. saturday was pretty eventful. after the night of rockin with 30-something grungers, i was up early with kim to go to her brother’s football game. next up was the egg and I for some tasty breakfast goodness. later on was a little tailgate mooching with karen and her fam before the cu game. and yes, they lost again. 0 and 3 now. arizona state kicked our trash and our offensive line just fell apart. all my hopeful teams lost last saturday actually. they usually do. rarely has there been any team i rooted for during the season and they actually do good. it was a night game so it was pretty cold and windy. fall just kind of snuck up on us here because the cold won’t seem to give us a break. anyway, later that night we went to karen’s and watched a movie. the end. sunday was the usual. yesterday was homework all day. today is crappy school and an avs game with tom. i thought april would want to go with the tickets I gave them, but this is cool too. never been to a hockey game so i’m pretty stoked. but that’s later. right now it’s tennesee jed.

Mulholland Drive (2001): a woman tries to uncover her identity after an amnesia-inducing car accident, only for us to discover she is just some other girl's fantasy. or is she? or maybe she's not. no, she's real. something like that. from the descriptions I’ve been given about this movie, it sounds for sure to be one of the most confusing movies i’ve ever seen. so i’m going to try and pay extra attention. for a good half of the movie there are so many subplots going on that it does make it a little confusing. but the scenes transition and flow so well between one another. lynch is really good at messing with and controlling the viewer’s emotion. he really puts us in the character’s perspective well. it’s one of the most artistic and dramatic movies i’ve seen. and although i don’t quite understand 100 percent of what all happened, it’s still so well done and interesting that i didn’t want it to end. so i will probably recommend buying it to watch over and over. and yes, for nothing else, the lesbo scene is off the hook. so for those that like that arthouse movies with plots going in every direction, this one’s certainly for you. and for those that say they don’t like those movies only because they really have never seen any, you probably don’t want to start with this one. pulp fiction sets the standard for all, so that’s where you want to be.

the wedding

well saturday was the big day. tom's big day, not mine. friday i had my crappy telecom theory class and all we are learning so far is crappy algebra that i've learned three or four times already in my life, and have also forgotten three or four times in my life. aside from a few facts here and there and a couple unique subjects, that's all most of our education is. we learn something, then the second that grades are distributed, we forget what what we have learned. i can't tell you how many times i've learned about log() and ln() crap, but don't ask me to explain that to you today. i don't even know if i just wrote that down right. now i will have to learn it again and actually understand it. and that's the easy crap i have to re-learn.

anyway, i had that class then kim had to pick me up so we could race over to the rehearsal dinner. i had already missed the actual rehearsal because of class, but whatever. we showed up pretty fashionably late to the dinner at los arcos in westside and we got stuck sitting by april's sister and brother-in-law who was so, so weird. he was really nice because he would really try engage in conversations with us, but i could have sure done without him ever opening his mouth. and what's up with his hair?? on a side note, i have to say that i'm eating this egg sandwich that kim made for me and it is heaven. when they aren't scrambled, she will usually make them over easy and they are kind of too runny for me. so i finally told her last time to cook them longer so i don't die of salmonella. she did really good this time. gracias kim.

recent dvds added to the collection: anywhere but here, before sunrise, brokeback mountain.

after dinner some of the guys headed to tom to play some poker. i've never wanted to play, meaning i've never wanted to learn, meaning i never have. but i thought i'd try it and i guess it was pretty fun. tom and his friends matt and jason are pretty hardcore players and do tournements all the time, but they were fairly patient with me. being patient with each other is a different story however. there were times when i thought they were gonna just go at it right there. most of the problems stemmed from one of the guys who i really beleive has some mental issues and should probably be on meds for it. don't get me wrong, he is an awesome guy but he's got a few issues.

so cu lost again. and of course the wedding was great. most thought that the toast went well. or at least they were just being nice. the only bad stuff that happened was college football and too much cheesy dancing. other than all of that it’s really just been business as usual for me. i’m on my third night trying to get through the movie mulholland drive. right now i am completely lost in the film, but it's still kept me interested. tonight should be my last night so we’ll see. time for homework.

the first week of school (sucked cox)

oh man what a week. i’m learning things that i never wanted to know about for all the money in the world. this econ class i’m taking is just terrible. my easiest class, which is actually far from easy, is some java programming class in the mornings and i'm so not a morning person. fridays i have telecom theory and applications which is really math intensive. not a good thing. then once a week i have this seminar thing which is only two credits and involves speakers and such, however the work load is ridiculous and it easily rivals my other classes in terms of difficulty. i have to take seminar twice to graduate, but there are projects and papers to come that i am absolutely dreading.

yesterday at the pool i had the pleasure of listening to our apartment’s most dysfunctional family. the two times i’ve heard them i haven’t seen a dad. only the mom, one or two of her kids, an aunt and her kid. the women scream at the top of their lungs at the kids and the rest of the time just talk in very loud voices. one minute they are talking about the latest gossip, the next minute the kids are screaming and crying, then they get spanked, parents are yelling, and it’ll finally calm down. here were some of my favorite quotes of the day:
woman: "are you finished going pee? matthew remove your penis."
garbled
matthew: "i want my money."
screaming
yelling
unintelligable
matthew: "ow, ow!" crying
woman: "be quiet. that doesn't hurt."
matthew: "i want my mama."
woman: "oh stop whining matthew."
saturday kim and i are going to the cu game and we are, well i am, so stoked. i’m sure she’s excited too. they play montana state. we need all the help we will get so hopefully playing them will be good for us.

well cu sure choked on saturday’s game. most are blaming james cox, our quarterback. some guys got some amusing chants going including, “i hate cox” and “you suck cox”. i put a lot of the blame on our defense. sure we held them back a few times within inches of the line, but we just could not stop their qb from getting it down the field. oh well. this saturday they will go to the slaughter against csu. however, i will be going to the slaughter at tom’s wedding during the game. this speech thing is driving me nuts. it’s just a damn toast that will last barely a minute but i’m getting so much pressure to pretty much put on a freaking show. call me a party pooper but i’m really not looking forward to this saturday. no, i am.

the new texas chainsaw massacre looks really good, but too scary for me to see.

Beerfest (2006): two guys must defend their grandparent’s honor by beating the germans at their own game, which is basically drinking olympics. a great example of proximate cause in negligence is in a pretty funny scene where they hit some kid. you just have to see it. it’s really foul and only about 30 percent of the all the jokes are actually funny. a lot of the movie is so ridiculous that you just have to laugh. some of my more favorite lines are, "i wish i could put my dick in it." "i wish i could put it’s dick in me." and you know, i had a couple more but didn’t write them down. trust me that they were funny. the special effects for the big finale competition (the boot) sucked really bad. all in all, there was nothing special about it and it’s completely ridiculous. unless you are into that sort of thing (ryan), it’s probably not worth your time.
disappointing, C-

after the movie they hint at their next project, potfest. and since stoner movies are usually better than drunken movies, i’d see potfest if it actually comes out.

i’m putting together all my movie reviews into one handy page. it’s tedious work but it’s still kind of fun. joey pointed out that so many people give a shit about my reviews (or the blog in general) so i wouldn’t want to disappoint.

my seminar class sucks so bad that i will probably drop it today, leaving only three classes, which is fine by me. even though i say i’m on the road to being a post-grad dropout, i think i will be on the two and a half year plan. and people keep asking what it is i will do with this when i’m done. good question. work for a telecom company i suppose. i’m not the crazy technical engineer that most of my peers seem to be, so i will most likely emphasize in like business management or policy. what is likely to happen is that i will graduate, work for a telecom as some low level nothing, and do my best to work up the ladder. isn’t that everyone’s plan? it’s a damn good one so long as there is opportunity to rise up. first things first though. i need to learn java, economics, finance, and horrible math applied to telecom. terrible.

i hate the fact that my pictures on the blog are always like a month behind what is actually going on. in order to update the pics i have to put up a post, but because of no time and lack of motivation, i don’t post as much as i’d like. so i figure we could go a little out of order on the pics.

i haven’t ran in days and am not sticking to my eating plan very well. it’s not good. i’m gaining a bit of weight back, but hopefully this is the week to get me back on track. it’s never going to happen so long as tom keeps wanting to eat out for lunch every day at school. like today. damn you tom. no more. it ends tomorrow!
